About BEACHTECH

The main objective of the “BEACHTECH” operation is to highlight how the coastal zone is adapting to the risks (flood disasters and coastal erosion) due to climate change, through their comprehensive assessment and evaluation of effective conservation projects, actions that will contribute to the sustainable development of one of the most crucial sectors of the Greek and Cypriot economy, coastal tourism. A complementary and integrated program of action was designed that will be implemented in close cooperation with the University of the Aegean, the Cyprus University of Technology, the North Aegean Region, and the Municipality of Pegeia Cyprus. A significant number of beaches in the North Aegean Region and the Municipality of Pegeia are already facing very significant erosion problems. The operation has a structured information management/dissemination strategy based on “Smart Specialization” actions and direct information that will highlight the benefits of cross-border cooperation, in terms of transferring know-how to address / manage common natural hazards. The executives and the young Greek and Cypriot coastal scientists and engineers who will be involved in practice will become partners of innovative research methodologies, which are a prerequisite for the future effective management and sustainability of the coastal zone. The outputs of the operation will be extremely useful not only for the North Aegean Region and the Municipality of Pegeia, but also for the Regional / National competent authorities, the coastal administrators and populations and the tourism industry of the wider island of Greece and Cyprus.
