Exposome-based public health interventions for infectious diseases in urban settings

We conducted a narrative review using an exposome approach to explore short-term changes in the children’s exposome profile (<18 years old) associated with the COVID-19 measures implemented in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR).

Main findings:

  • Supporting access to educational and nutritional services for all children remains most challenging
  • Years of planned efforts to prevent child labour and early child marriage as well as to eradicate poliomyelitis in the region are at risk
  • The effects of COVID-19 response measures on the human endogenous response have not been effectively tackled
  • It is important to assess the medium- and longer-term impact of COVID-19 response measures on children’s health, specific to each of the EMR countries, for the development of sustainable recovery programs
