On the occasion of World Water Day that is celebrated every year on March 22, Dr. Konstantinos C. Makris and Dr. George Botsaris, both faculty members of the Cyprus University of Technology, analyzed and interpreted the published drinking water quality data of Health Services across the island of Cyprus for the first half of 2014. The interpretation of the drinking water quality data from various areas of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta was presented in the newspaper of Phileleftheros and you can find more information in this link:http://bit.ly/1N5Ojh4 In short, 200 samples per city) collected from urban areas of Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos, exceeded the EU Directive 98/83 limits for microbiological indicators, highlighting the good urban water quality (chemical parameters were all within limits ). However, in several rural communities the drinking water quality was deteriorated because of the presence of microbial contamination, where relevant microbiological indicators (coliforms) exceeded the statutory limit of public health protection. It is necessary to implement intervention measures such as systematic disinfection to help communities reduce coliform growth in their tap water.
