WEBINAR: Emerging Climate Hazards for Children

In this webinar, it was our honor to host:
Dr. Matthew Gribble, Associate Professor, School of Medicine, Associate Chief for Research in Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine, University of California, San Francisco

Climate change is reshaping the environmental exposures encountered by populations now and in the future. This includes exposures linked to climate disasters such as floods and wildfires, and more gradual changes such as drinking water chemistry, seafood contamination, air pollution, and plant community composition and pollen; along with changes in exposure to synergistic combinations of exposures (e.g., “polluen” joint exposure to air pollution and pollen). Children are an especially vulnerable population for several climate-related harms. Smaller body sizes may correspond to elevated poisoning risks from climate-linked toxin exposures (e.g., algal toxins). Many children suffer from asthma that may be sensitive to polluen exposure and to wildfire smoke, and pediatric respiratory development is important for health over the life course.
